The Arizona Geological Survey (AZGS) is Arizona’s Earth science agency. We are responsible for mapping, evaluating, and informing the public regarding Arizona’s geologic setting. In order to meet this charge, we employ an interdisciplinary team of educated professionals that includes geologists, hydrologists, geomorphologists, petroleum geologists, natural hazard specialists, GIS specialists, web developers, and science outreach and administrative personnel.

Store Manager: Arizona Experience Store ** THIS POSITION HAS BEEN FILLED **

STORE MANAGER POSITION. The Store Manager is chiefly responsible for 1) maintaining a fully-stocked and functional retail store outlet; 2) assisting customers - walk-in, telephone, and e-mail customers - in a pleasant, engaging, courteous and efficient manner; 3) working with the Sales and Marketing manager and the chief of the Geologic Extension Service to grow the store, select new inventory, increase sales, and identify and engage new clientele. A strong background in POS (point of sale) software is key to success in this position.
Store merchandize includes books (focusing on natural history), products of the Arizona Geological Survey and the Arizona Geological Society, topographic and geologic maps, and gift items.
This individual works under general supervision of an administrative superior, in accordance with established policies, methods, and procedures. The store manager is authorized to draft and submit purchase orders for inventory and supplies; establish minimum stock levels and reorder points; accept/reject deliveries of supplies, materials, and/or equipment; pick, pack, stage, and/or deliver requested items. This person also maintains an independent/satellite storeroom, ordering, receiving, storing, stocking inventorying, maintaining bookshelves, and distributing a wide variety of merchandize. Inventory and sales information is documented and monitored using Point-of-sale software.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES. Receives deliveries of supplies, materials, and/or equipment, checking items
received against invoices, purchase orders, bills of lading and related documents to ensure correct
quantity/quality. Interfaces with vendors regarding new products, delivery schedules, ordering/purchasing activities, and/or problem resolution. Stocks shelves/bins with incoming items
and/or from stock reserves, rotating items in conformance with established procedures. Picks, packs,
stages, and/or delivers materials, supplies, and/or equipment. Updates inventory control records
regarding items received/issued. Physically inventories stock on a periodic basis. Prepares documents
for purchasing, ordering, and/or issuing materials, supplies, and/or equipment. Prepares reports
regarding supplies/materials usage and projected needs. Assigns and monitors work of store clerk or student intern. Assists Phoenix AZGS staff with POS/sales as needed. Performs related work as required.
Some specific tasks include, but are not limited to:
- Opening the store at 8:00 a.m. and closing at 5:00 p.m. Monday-Friday;
- Ordering inventory and tracking inventory;
- Labeling and displaying merchandise;
- Processing retail orders – in-person, by phone, fax, or e-mail - and refunds in POS (point-of-sales system);
- Secure handling of cash, check and credit card sales;
- Reconciling day-end receipts;
- Maintaining and reporting sales information – weekly, monthly, quarterly and annually;
- Managing store assistants/interns;
- Assist in reconciling annual inventory survey;
- Maintaining a clean, safe, and attractive retail space;
- Working with accounting team to assure transfer of cash as documented in Store/Accounting protocols;
- Manufacture and prepare (bind, fold, or roll) AZGS publications (e.g., Open-File Reports, Contributed Reports, Digital Geologic Maps);
- Participate in special events, e.g., sidewalk sales, Tucson Festival of Books, etc.;
- Adhere to assigned work schedules and submit bi-weekly time sheets;
- Promote teamwork with positive, clear communication;
- Employees are subject to the policies of the department of AZGS and DOA;
- Maintaining and stocking the Public Lands section which comprises free materials from federal, state, county, and local municipalities;
- Assist in hosting social network sites – Twitter and Facebook.
WORK CONDITIONS. Frequent lifting involving items weighing 20 pounds or less; occasional
lifting/moving items weighing 40 pounds or more; exposure to low- to moderate-noise, dust, and temperature variation.
SPECIAL SELECTION FACTORS. Requires ability to pass a post-offer physical exam. Requires a current, valid Arizona driver’s license appropriate to the assignment; this can be waived at the discretion of the AZGS Director.
