The Arizona Geological Survey (AZGS) is Arizona’s Earth science agency. We are responsible for mapping, evaluating, and informing the public regarding Arizona’s geologic setting. In order to meet this charge, we employ an interdisciplinary team of educated professionals that includes geologists, hydrologists, geomorphologists, petroleum geologists, natural hazard specialists, GIS specialists, web developers, and science outreach and administrative personnel.

Description: The person in this position serves as the Budget and Accounting Officer for the Agency (35 employees, $10 million annual budget, headquartered in Tucson with a branch in Phoenix) and will oversee all fiscal activities including state and federal accounting; procurement; budget preparation and tracking; approval of internal financial systems and processes; assist in preparing funding proposals; preparation of statistical, financial and other reports; oversee the daily, monthly and end-of-fiscal year reconciling of funds; guidance and assistance to agency and project managers; preparation and negotiation of indirect rate agreements. Responsible for any audits the agency may face. Reports to the Chief Administrative Officer. Oversees an accounting assistant.
The Arizona Geological Survey has moved to being mostly self-funded through contracts and grants. AZGS is a highly regarded scientific agency with statewide responsibilities and national and international projects and reputation. The agency is growing at an unprecedented rate and took over the AZ Dept. of Mines & Mineral Resources effective July 1, 2011. We are looking for a budgeting and accounting leader who can mesh the stability of a state-based system with the agency's culture of entrepreneurship and innovation.
Requirements: Education, training, and experience in accounting and budgeting (with capabilities in public sector or non-profit sector). Understanding of State government laws, rules, and operations related to accounting, budgeting, and financial management. Preference given to someone with advanced knowledge of AFIS, including data entry as well as data inquiry, and knowledge of how to read and use various DAFR reports. Familiarity with Quickbooks is a plus.
Must be well organized and take initiative. Must be able to adapt to changing needs and timelines. Must be able to oversee duties of all financial personnel and have the ability to take over those responsibilities as needed.

Description: The Arizona Geological Survey (AZGS, http://www.azgs.az.gov/) is developing and implementing a National Geothermal Data System (http://www.stategeothermaldata.org/) to connect the State and Federal geological surveys, universities, and other data providers with various user communities using standardized web services to deliver Earth science information for geothermal energy development.
Duties: We are seeking an IT systems support specialist to maintain AZGS and National Geothermal Data System hardware and software in good working order, and to assist users with hardware and software technical problems.
Requirements: We are looking for someone with experience in maintaining a networked, office computer system (with some remote users and a separate, remote office) using Microsoft software, in addition to publicly accessible Microsoft- and Linux-based web servers. Our computer systems include laptops, desktop computers and servers running Windows 7 or Windows Server (2003, 2008) operating systems. Some of the web servers are running Ubuntu Linux. Other components include a firewall, network switches, and a variety of standalone and networked printers and scanners. ESRI ArcGIS, Microsoft Office and Project, and Adobe Creative Suite are the principal desktop software packages in use. Microsoft SQL server databases are used for GIS systems. Web services are based on Microsoft IIS, ESRI ArcGIS server, Apache, and Tomcat. We are looking for candidates who are familiar with all or many of these systems and interested in learning. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, a good problem solver, attentive to detail, asks questions when necessary, and works well in a team environment.
Knowledge, skill and ability the employee in this position must have acquired in order to perform work satisfactorily:
- Ability to amiably assist non-expert computer users
- Skill in debugging hardware and software failures, performance problems, and unexpected behavior
- Knowledge of TCP/IP and Windows network operation
- Knowledge of architecture, operation and maintenance of Windows desktop and server operating systems
- Knowledge of Window and Linux-based web server operation and tuning.
